RELAZIONE

Seguono negli anni successivi esposizioni a Ferrara, Lippstadt, Cosenza, Castrovillari, Altomonte.

to,  dove l’acqua di Tevere s’insala,

                                      benignamente   fui  da  lui    ricolto.

                                  A quella foce  ha  egli  or  dritta  l’ala;

però che  sempre  quivi  si raccoglie

                                      qual   verso   d’Acheronte   non   si

                                      cala.>>

Ilario Quirino (born in Cosenza in 1959), self-taught, fascinated by Antonio Ligabue’s figures  began his painting career.  Later on he developed an interest for expressionism.  In 1990 he meets Giuseppe Zigaina, with whom he develops a personal and cultural tie that brings  him to increase his painting activity and to love the work of Pasolini. In 1994 he held his first exhibition in the gallery Il Triangolo  in Cosenza, directed by Enzo Le Pera. The following year, another exhibition  in the gallery Il Patio in Ravenna; on this occasion a letter that Zigaina wrote to him in July 1994 is published.  Other exhibitions were held in Ferrara, Lippstadt, Cosenza, Castrovillari, Altomonte. In 1999 he published the text Pasolini sulla strada di Tarso (Pasolini on the road to Tarsus) , where he focuses on the dramatic relationship between the poet from Casarsa and St. Paul. This brought him to meet Father Ferdinand Castelli, editor of La Civilta' Cattolica (The Catholic Civilization), who showed deep interest in his research. In 2000 he is invited, along with Joseph Zigaina and John Scalia, to the Festival de l'Unita'  in Bologna to speak about Pasolini's  work.  The following year the editors of the Opera Omnia by Pasolini,  includedthe text Pasolini sulla strada di Tarso in the volume dedicated to the Teatro , under the bibliography section of the critics of  Pasolini’s  work  from 1943 to 1999. From this research comes forth the encounter with the Bolognese poet Roberto Roversi (Editor, together with Pasolini, of the magazine (Officina) that, in 2003, he dedicated an unpublished poem.  In 2004 a personal exhibition in the gallery  Studio 71 in Palermo titled Le vibrazioni cromatiche della natura, by Aldo Gerbino and Vinny Scorsone. In the same year he participates in the  international fairs in Ghent and in Strasbourg in the collective proposal  by the art gallery Edizione dell'Acquario of Padua, directed by Julian Lanza. In 1990 I met Giuseppe Zigaina, with whom, over the years, I have established a profound human and cultural tie. Since the beginning,  he spoke to me about his studies on the work of Pier Paolo Pasolini and on the belief that the poet had organized his own violent death. I was shocked by that statement and at the same time, I started to study (and love) the writer's work, fascinated by the mystery of his death. So, I began to inquire into the poet's family life, dwelling on the morbid relationship with his mother, on the torn  relationship  that contrasted the father figure, almost wanting to revive the myth of Oedipus and, finally, I lingered on the plot that had inseparably tied him to the figure of Guido, the younger brother (by three years). He died before he reached the age of twenty in the mountains of Carnia, in February 1945, where, as part of the resistance to the Fascist regime he had embarked in the  Osoppo-Friuli brigade. He was shot by Tito's partisans, who wanted to annex a part of Friuli to Yugoslavia. Pasolini never freed himself from the guilt related to  his brother's violent end, as he realized that he was responsible for that end. While Guido had learned to fight with the rifle, Pier Paolo had preferred to take up arms of  literature, and at the same time had pushed his younger brother towards armed battle. Therefore, Pasolini immediately realized that Guido was killed by the hand of a fraternal enemy, which meant that he had not only been slaughtered by Communist partisans, but mainly that the real person accountable of this murder was himself. The poet probably meditated suicide, but given that such an act creates a void immediately  filled by the worst quality of life, he began to think of a cultural journey, veiled by an extraordinary ambiguity, and based on the violent and performed death of the author, dedicated to his  beloved brother. It's no coincidence that the  all the characters in  Pasolini's works die on Sunday, as Sunday was the day when his brother Guido died (February 12, 1945), in this same way, death assumes a predominant role in the writer's theme, to which the concept of freedom is inseparably tied: freedom to choose death.

This psychological (and cultural ) orientation brought  him back in time to the theme of Christ and, in particular, to the significance of the cross. What came forth,  known as, one of his cinematic masterpieces: The Gospel According to Matthew, where Pier Paolo, to signify that he really wanted to be in Jesus' place, had no hesitation to give his mother the role of the Madonna in the act of despair at the foot of the cross, also renewing, in her, the agony of Guido's death and  announcing the agony of his own sacrifice. But Pasolini found a pedagogical model more relevant to his inner drama, and, somehow, more familiar: St. Paul. He realized that the Apostle of the People, clothed to perfection his own experience and, thus, interpreted the story of Saul keeping into account his own personal drama. He revisited the famous conversion on the road to Damascus based on events that took place some time before, that is, the stoning of Stephen. In reality, Saul, the Christian persecutor, had taken part in the stoning of the Protomartyr through a competition of a psychological nature, for he gives his consent to the stoning guarding the witnesses' clothes  that, freed from their  cloaks, could  more easily throw stones. Pasolini interprets the fulguration of Saul on the road to Damascus based on the  remorse for what had happened to the Protomartyr, and not in relation to divine intervention. Therefore,  as  Pier Paolo had allowed his brother Guido to leave for the mountains of Carnia offering his life for freedom, in the same manner,  Saul gives his consent to the lapidation of Stephen by guarding the executioners' cloaks. Such parallelism suggests that a series of adjustments related to his own cultural process were modeled by the figure of Paul of Tarsus, who was the organizer of the Church. After  he was converted, Paul became the most ardent supporter of Christian charity, walking extraordinary lengths to establish religious communities, suffering everything, transmitting his own inner experience through the Letters, but mostly waiting with joy and trepidation the violent moment of his passing , which would have coincided with the eternal embrace with the Christ he had once persecuted.

                    .
In his own imagination, Pasolini hoped to meet Paul.   In 1950, the Jubilee Year, when following the known charges of pedophilia he had to leave the beloved Friuli and find shelter, along with his mother in Rome, where his amazing artistic-cultural rise began.  This   led him to indelibly mark the '900s. He thought he was embracing Paul, after about nineteen centuries, that he  reached the Eternal City from the other direction, that is from the Mediterranean basin, landing at Pozzuoli and from there walked to Rome, and later met his death at Acque Salvie; according to legend, his disciples took his body and buried him on Via Ostiense, afterwards  the beautiful Basilica dedicated to him was built. Pasolini had  a controversial relationship with the apostle, disapproving the pharisee (which he bitterly felt inside himself) and intensely loving the great planner, the champion of love and the Saint, which was heroically projected towards decapitation. Thus, at the turn of the sixties and seventies, together with the collection of the Trasumanar e organizzar poems,  two of his fundamental works are born- though unacknowledged - based on the Paul’s teaching: Ostia and San Paolo; the first script, apparently made with Sergio Citti, represents in the most obvious and dramatic way the sense of guilt mentioned many times that consumed the existence of Pasolini: In this work two brothers, Rabbino and Bandiera, (but we could also say Pier Paolo and Guido) bind themselves to a mysterious woman discovered (not by chance by Ninetto Davoli) apparently dead on the mountain of Cocci; this person,  in two different occasions accompanies the two brothers on the beach of Ostia.   After letting them bathe, after having had sexual intercourse on the beach with Rabbino, a fatal quarrel  broke out between the two brothers.  A fight ending in the murder of Bandiera by his brother who hits him in the back of the neck with a piece of an oar, that the victim had picked up to light the fire on the beach. Rabbino, as soon as he realized what happened,  begins to swear to the mysterious creature who is leaving disappearing towards the sea after having accomplished her mandate.  Cursing, the fratricide continues to pursue her, but then calms down: he realizes that nothing can be done against  a higher plan, and caught by the surprise that marks his religious experience, he approaches his brother's corpse, he takes off his shirt and with it buffers Bandiera's gushing blood which is flowing from his head injuries.

This drama is in reality connected to a crucial moment between Pino Pelosi and Pier Paolo Pasolini in the night between the first and second of November - on the same coast at Ostia - of the year 1975, when the poet, struck in the head by his young lover he unbuttons by himself his bloody shirt - so have the experts established - removing the buttons from their holes to buffer the blood gushing from his own head, so making an act which reconnects it in a fulminous way to the script in question. Pasolini, instead of running away, performs a procedure explained solely as a symbolic gesture; in other words, the writer leaves a trace at the scene of the crime to let us know  that, on that night the intertwining of his own blood and Guido's blood is absolutely complete. Not by chance he writes in a poem: con la testa spaccata/la nostra testa/tesoro umile della famiglia (with his head split / our heads/ humble treasure of the  family). So that there are no more doubts about the motive  of this script to discover Pasolini's project, dictated by the need of purification, it is important to quote the verses - drawn from the second chant of Dante's Purgatory, 100-105 - that the writer puts in an  epigraph to this script:

                                   << Ond’io,  ch’era  ora alla marina vol-

to,  dove l’acqua di Tevere s’insala,

                                               benignamente   fui  da  lui    ricolto.

                                           A quella  foce  ha  egli or  dritta  l’ala;

però che  sempre quivi  si raccoglie

                                               qual   verso   d’Acheronte  non    si

                                               cala.>>

Pasolini highlights those verses in which Dante gives voice to his fraternal friend Casella, who, after having met and having attempted to embrace the great poet, confides in him that he has wandered for three months "where the waters of the Tevere rises " in the hope of being embarked on the boat guided  by the Helmsman angel to purge him of his sins.  In fact, at the mouth of the river Tevere  the souls awaiting purification were picked up by the divine boat that would transport the same people from Ostia towards the beach from which one could reach the mount of Purgatory.  But in the year 1300  - the first jubilee of history - the Lord, on the occasion of this event, had decided to embark - by means of a winged angel - whoever had requested to. It is no coincidence that Pasolini was murdered in 1975, also a Jubilee year.

This script is directly connected to Pasolini's San Paolo, which  was never translated in the related movie. In this screenplay, to demonstrate that the apostle is here, today, among us, but also to divert the viewer's attention, the film director moves from the past  ancient cities into the metropolis of the 1960's, changing the missionary journeys of the Saint from the Mediterranean  to the Atlantic, so Rome became New York, Antiochia is transformed into London, Jerusalem  became Paris and finally Athens turns into Rome. The confirmation of the most striking parallels between Guido and the Protomartyr can be appreciated at the beginning of this script, set as said in 1960, where the ancient lapidation is transformed into the modern shooting of Stephan, a boy just a bit younger than Saul. And  Saul assisting, with guilty hatred,  to that martyrdom,  passionately approving the execution.  Following is  the conversion of the persecutor of Christians, who will suffer from a mysterious illness - a thorn in the flesh - that will frequently remind him of the murder of the innocent Stephan . The screenplay is  fundamentally based on  the Acts of the Apostles and the Letters of Paul, but at some point Pasolini folds such structure towards his own organization and he does it warning the spectator that the passage in question represents the  only  "abstract" scene of the story: the director describes the "outskirts of Rome," which as highlighted before , should be the outskirts of Athens, but Pasolini really wants to mean the degraded slums of Rome, in one word Ostia: and said: << Qui c'e' un ciglio d'erba tisica; un ponte; un immondezzaio; uno sterro desolato>>. It's the chance to describe the place where an ambush in regards  to Paul takes place, while speaking to a group of people coming  from the neighboring dilapidated houses. Pasolini refers to an incident described in Acts, where Paul while he was in Listra, after he had miraculously cured a sick, refuses an animal sacrifice, so was stoned by some Jews and left on the ground apparently dead.  The director completes this episode contaminating it with phrases drawn from the 1st Letter to the Corinthians about the resurrection and adapting what happened in the real suburbs of Ostia .
Finally, Paul will reach New York , the scene will take place in a small hotel possibly the same as the one where  Martin Luther King was killed and it is here, after writing the last letter to Timothy  his beloved disciple, which will gather the Saint's innermost thoughts, that he will be killed with two gun shots by a spiritual figure that will give back the gunshots exploded against the Protomartyr.
In reality, completely intertwined with the screenplays of Ostia and of San Paolo, Pasolini, after having dined in a restaurant in the San Lorenzo district of Rome, with Ninetto Davoli and his family (wife and children, called Guido and Pier Paolo) stepped away from the group saying that "he was going to give a look at a script." It's important to underline that Ninetto was the great love of his life, towards which he felt a love greater than any other  love, an affection that was opposed to the unbridled pursuit of casual and risky sexual adventures. Ninetto represented, for the poet, the reflection of Guido and his marriage had resulted in a clear depressive reaction for Pier Paolo.
